Vlogging vs Streaming

[Dutch Lock Down Day One Hundred Eighty Six]

The edit.

That’s it.

The difference between vlogging and streaming is editing.

But first the news:

Streaming media is multimedia that is constantly received by and presented to an end-user while being delivered by a provider. The verb to stream refers to the process of delivering or obtaining media in this manner. Streaming refers to the delivery method of the medium, rather than the medium itself.

On Saturday night I’ll do a stream where I’ll do an escape room – edited, LIVE, and I guarantee I’ll mess up. Start over. Fix things on air.

And be VERY human.

A video blog or video log, sometimes shortened to vlog, is a form of blog for which the medium is video, and is a form of web television. Vlog entries often combine embedded video with supporting text, images, and other metadata. Entries can be recorded in one take or cut into multiple parts.

On SUNDAY I’ll edit that the stream from Saturday night to do a highlight reel. It’ll go from a little over an hour to a minute or two in length. There will be no bloopers unless I purposefully leave them there.

And, if I want to, I’ll seem More Human Than Human.

Of course, I didn’t actually post this on Saturday, but on Sunday, back posting it, because I totally forgot to write on Saturday.

Rather, I remembered to write, but not until 21:30 at night, after the stream, and as I was going to bed, so I thought, “Fuck it”, and went to sleep anyway.

My friend, S, was over for dinner last night and I said, “Hey, wanna join me for a stream to do an escape room?” and she said, “I have no idea what you just said, but yes.”

Here’s what I learned.

More is More

Not only did we “get out” of The Formula, but we got out in TWENTY MINUTES. And then, with forty minutes before my bedtime, we dove into another escape room AND GOT OUT OF THAT ONE, TOO.

Lesson learned – when you have more eyes on the cards and more brains in the game, things go faster. Of course, I have viewers, but they can’t SEE the cards AND the time it takes to stream out / comment in slows it down.

Maybe I just need someone to join me always?

Or accept that I’m going to go slower without a Studio Assistant.

Sort The Cards First

Holy free holies, that made a massive difference in how quickly we were able to get going. But when you have a Studio Assistant it also goes incredibly fast.

Geez That Connection Is SLOW

I REALLY need to either lay some cables from the house OR stream from the house in attached directly to the router because that stream is dropping packets like mad.

Also Geez That Camera Is BAD

Except I don’t know if that’s exactly true because maybe it’s that the connection is so bad that neither camera can handle it? Except even when I’m entirely offline I don’t have a way for people to see the cards up close.

I dug up my DSLR and it turns out that it’s So Old that it doesn’t have a way to connect to a computer. Rather, I’ve lost the cord. And I lost the battery charger. And I lost the battery. Okay, so basically I found the camera itself and NOTHING ELSE.

Set Up Is Important

I forgot to set up the ipad. I forgot to set up the white paper. I forgot to set up so very many things, but, as I mentioned, I had a Studio Assistant and she streamlined SO MANY THINGS.

S, do you want to join me every Saturday night?

I’ll pay you with gin.
