The Dancing Engineer Who Loves #Adagio and #Apps

[Dutch Lock Down Day Two Hundred Ninety]

A new month brings a new theme and I’ve chosen Applications and Adagio as my passions for January 2021.

Or, as I prefer to write it, #Adagio and #Apps.

But first the news:

Holy hell, if you google ‘adagio’ you get a LOT of results, including a TOWN here in the Netherlands and quite a few hotels in said town.

Today I Learned

But the specific version I’m referencing is the tempo, specifically with regards to dance and ballet.

Italian, or French adage, meaning ‘slowly, at ease.’

  1. Slow movements performed with fluidity and grace.
  2. One of the typical exercises of a traditional ballet class, done both at barre and in center, featuring slow, controlled movements.
  3. The section of a grand pas (e.g., grand pas de deux), often referred to as grand adage, that features dance partnering.

Definition number one is my particular favourite.

Application software (app for short), on the other hand, is a program or group of programs designed for end-users. Examples of an application include a word processor, a spreadsheet, an accounting application, a web browser, an email client, a media player, a file viewersimulators, a console game, or a photo editor. The collective noun application software refers to all applications collectively. This contrasts with system software, which is mainly involved with running the computer.

Applications may be bundled with the computer and its system software or published separately and may be coded as proprietary, open-source, or projects. Apps built for mobile platforms are called mobile apps.

Just as adagio is approached slowly and with great care, I approach application development in the same way, which may be to my own detriment. I’d rather take my time in the planning period, than release early and often.

Which is NOT good.

Very NOT DevOps.

This month I’m going to try to take my application development process up a notch with more of an allegro tempo than the adagio tempo I’m more comfortable with – if you’ve got specific advice to transform, I’m all ears.

And I look forward to the month’s experiments.
