You may have noticed… I have been thinking about writing more.
Which, historically, is a thing I am extremely good at thinking about.
Writing is somewhat more complicated.
So I have apparently responded to this problem by creating a framework.
Because Of Course I Have.
The system is this:
Monday: Play.
Tuesday: Spirit.
Wednesday: Mind.
Thursday: Body.
Friday: Life.
And today is Wednesday.
Mind day.
The day on which I am writing about the system I invented for writing.
This feels extremely on brand.
The idea is not that I need five different versions of myself.
It is almost the opposite.
I have a lot of things I am curious about.
I think about Developer Experience and open source and technology. I think about leadership. I think about consciousness and metaphysics and whether we actually know anything about anything.
I think about my body and what it means to take care of it.
I think about spirituality and loving kindness and how to be a person in relationship with other people without disappearing into them.
I think about life.
And I would also, occasionally, like to be deeply unserious.
So I made some buckets.
On Mondays, I am going to play.
I don’t entirely know what that means yet.
That is sort of the point.
Tuesday is Spirit.
For the next while, I want to spend Tuesdays moving through my Sutra of Loving Kindness and Being a few lines at a time.
Not explaining it.
Sitting with it.
Seeing what happens.
Wednesday is Mind.
This is where the nerd shit goes.
Developer Experience. Technology. Leadership. Philosophy. Metaphysics. Things I am learning. Questions I can’t stop poking.
Including, apparently, posts about the organizational taxonomy of the blog itself.
Meta.
Thursday is Body.
Movement. Food. Rest. Somatics. Health. Pleasure. Strength. The strange experience of having a consciousness that requires hydration.
And Friday is Life.
This one is intentionally fuzzy.
Relationships. Family. Home. Adventures. Burning Man. Stories. Things that happened. Things I noticed. Things that don’t fit neatly into one of the other buckets.
Life, inconveniently, refuses to maintain a clean taxonomy.
I respect that.
There are projects tucked into some of these days, too.
I have a technical project called Other People’s Computers.
A leadership project called Speak Softly / Carry a Big Stick.
A metaphysical project called The Extraordinary Insanity Experiment, which contains entirely reasonable goals like understanding the nature of reality and inventing time travel.
There is a health project called Wake Up Beauty, It’s Time to Beast.
There is a larger project that contains all the projects.
Because apparently my hobbies include recursive project management.
Some of those will probably start appearing here.
But I don’t want this to become a publishing schedule in the grim Content Strategy sense.
I don’t want to wake up on Thursday thinking,
Shit. I owe the internet a Body.
I want a little structure.
A trellis, maybe.
Something things can grow on without deciding beforehand exactly what shape they are allowed to become.
And I want to experiment with the form itself.
Maybe some posts are photographs I took.
Maybe one week I don’t write anything and make a video instead.
Maybe there are tiny posts.
Maybe there are enormous ones.
Maybe something starts as Mind and wanders into Spirit and takes a detour through Life before falling face-first into Play.
YUP.
Also: this entire system might be bullshit.
I have constructed a lovely little five-day taxonomy on a Monday in October and am now explaining it to you two days later as though I have discovered the periodic table.
We will see.
Maybe in three weeks I will have faithfully written something every weekday.
Maybe Play will eat everything.
Maybe I will discover that Body and Spirit are secretly the same category.
Maybe Friday will become pictures of cats.
Maybe I will completely ignore this framework the moment something more interesting happens.
Honestly, I hope I do.
Because I don’t think the point of this experiment is to become better at following a content calendar.
I think the point is to notice what I want to make.
The framework just gives me somewhere to begin.
So.
For the next few weeks:
Play.
Spirit.
Mind.
Body.
Life.
Probably.
Let’s see what actually happens.
